Professor Shehzad Naroo is a Professor of Investigative Ophthalmology and Optometry at Aston University, Birmingham (UK). Shehzad’s research interests include laser refractive surgery, cataract and lens surgery, intraocular lenses, contact lenses, dry eye disease, corneal biomechanics, sports vision and business aspects of eye care. He has authored and co-authored over 200 publications (including peer-reviewed, editorials, textbook chapters, non-peer-reviewed etc.). Shehzad has lectured extensively in the area of legal aspects for ophthalmic practitioners, clinical negligence, contract law, ophthalmic co-management and professional matters for optometrists. Shehzad has acted as an expert witness for medico-legal ophthalmic cases for over 20 years, specialising in areas of co-management, consent, refractive surgery, contact lenses, dry eye disease, ocular trauma and routine optometric practice. He has been instructed on behalf of the plaintiff, defendant and also received joint instructions.
Shehzad did his BSc(Hons) at Aston University, followed by an MSc and a PhD at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). He is an examiner for the College of Optometrists, an international assessor for the General Optical Council. He is the former Global President of the International Association of Contact Lens Educators (IACLE). He is an Honorary Fellow of the British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) and Editor-in-Chief of the BCLA journal ‘Contact Lens and Anterior Eye’. Shehzad is an Honorary Professor at the King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Adjunct Professor at the Arab American University of Palestine in Ramallah. He is the West Midlands Regional Lead Hospitaller to the St John’s Eye Hospital Group in Jerusalem. He is a past recipient of World Council of Optometry International Optometrist Award (2015), related to philanthropic work in countries with less developed health care systems. He is listed in the world’s top two hundred research optometrists, in the top ten global experts in presbyopia and top fifty global experts in contact lenses.
